Black Ocean, a digital media company that invests in, builds and operates technology businesses around the world, today announced it acquired a majority stake in LMK from Hearst Entertainment & Syndication and will relaunch LMK in early 2012. LMK is a free, customizable mobile app that delivers the latest news and information to users on the topics they care about most. LMK is currently in beta in the iTunes Store and will launch in the Android Market later this month.

By providing the necessary capital infusion, bringing to bear our operational strengths and leveraging our deep capabilities in content monetization, we are taking this innovative app from fee-based to free and meeting consumer demand for a faster route to content, said Oliver Ripley, co-founder and CEO of Black Ocean.
Unlike existing, source-based news apps, LMK is topic-driven. LMK curates news, photos and information about popular people, places and things, and delivers the information users desire most directly to their mobile devices. Content is updated every few minutes. LMK is also a go-to app for breaking news. From hurricanes to the NBA lockout to celebrities, LMK delivers news from a variety of important sources as it happens.
After downloading the LMK app, users can build their customized news streams by scrolling through thousands of pre-loaded topics across five categories: business, entertainment, life, news, and sports. Within each topline category are detailed subcategories. For example, Sports has 12 subcategories, ranging from baseball to extreme sports. Users can continue to drill down within each subcategory until they access the precise topic they want; from basketball, they can choose college/mens, college/womens, pro players, and pro teams and then view an alphabetized list of teams or athletes for each. Topics can be added instantaneously by clicking on them to subscribe.
